Seductive Hong Kong Delights

By Laura Arden

Hong Kong offers more diversity and intrigue than some large countries combined. With its recent English rule in evidence in countless tangible ways and true Asian culture proudly humming along in confident style, there is so much to discover in this tiny treasure box of a place.

It feels like a cross between Honolulu, New York and the best of Asia in one relatively small, vertical package. Excellent food abounds, often in the Juiciest hotels, with a wide range of both familiar and exotic menus. Hong Kong oozes style and wealth but also welcomes visitors to a more low key, local experience in every neighborhood. Hotels come in all shapes, sizes and budgets, many with spectacular views of the harbor and the opposing skylines of Hong Kong and Kowloon.

Juicy Hong Kong Hotels

Hong Kong is bursting with Juicy Hotels to discover, each distinctive in flavor and style.

Island Shangri-La

The most opulent of the Hong Kong Island hotels, The Island Shangri-La wows with service, an impressive art collection, and a sense of quiet luxury. Bursting with rich colors, oriental carpets, dark wood, chandeliers and excellent dining choices, this elegant hotel invites you to settle in and relax.

The Vibe: Modern skyscraper outside and Chinese palace inside loaded with beautiful Asian art, chandeliers and greenery, teeming with polished staff attending to your every need before you ever have to ask.

What's Juicy: The service, the location, the dining options, the poolside restaurant, the opulent feel, the impressive art collection including the largest silk Chinese painting in the world and the stellar Horizon Club concierge lounge.

The Location:  Pacific Place is a business center, hotel hub with four excellent hotels (Island Shangri-La, The Conrad, Upper House and JW Marriott) and a subterranean shopping mall in the Central District of Hong Kong Island. It sits at the entrance to lush and peaceful Hong Kong Park, through which a birdsong filled walk leads to the Peak Tram stop, the trendy and fun neighborhoods of Soho, Lan Kwai Fong, Hollywood Road, Wyndham Road and more.

Hong Kong Park contains a tropical feeling network of paths, stairways, lakes with waterfalls and singing birds. It houses a zoo, aviary, popular tea house, conservatory of native flowers and plants, and much more. It's surrounded by business centers and the financial district which makes it a great location for either business or endless exploration of some of the city's most vibrant, cool neighborhoods.

Property Offerings: There's a lot to love about what this property offers. The concierge lounge is my favorite in the city (see below) with great views, palace atmosphere and five-star personalized service. The outdoor pool is in a fun 360 degree skyscraper setting, has an outdoor hot tub tucked back in the foliage and is bordered by a terrific Thai restaurant with outdoor tables. There are six excellent restaurants on the property and live classical music in the chandelier adorned lobby lounge. The art collection throughout the hotel adds to the palace feel, and includes the largest Chinese silk painting in the world, vertically spanning 54 stories.

The Rooms: Among the largest in Hong Kong, the rooms on the harbor side are luxurious and lush with some of the best views of the harbor. Nice touches like plenty of outlets where you need them, both next to the desk and next to the comfortable hang-out chairs, let you really settle in and feel at home. Rooms feature Nespresso coffee makers, wireless internet access, flat screen TVs, crystal chandeliers, large marble bathrooms with separate walk-in shower and soaking tub, and a lovely settee cleverly doubling as an extra dresser/storage space. These are rooms you can settle into for a longer stay and feel utterly at home.  I especially liked that they are large enough to accommodate two comfy chairs so if you are traveling with someone, everyone gets a living room kind of chair to relax in rather than having to sit at the desk.

Concierge Lounge: The Horizon Club concierge lounge is my favorite in Hong Kong, with stellar personalized service, luxurious jewel toned decor, drop dead views over the city and plenty of room to spread out and relax in. It's easy to score a perfect window table and you don't feel impacted by other guests because it's so spacious. It feels like relaxing or working in a Chinese mansion with silver tray service and hushed elegance but comfortable enough to relax and enjoy. There's a lovely atrium room adjacent to the lounge which offers wicker style seating in a lush, greenery filled space. Great for business meetings or reading a book, catching up on email or just having a glass of wine, it feels like Hong Kong Park delivered to your hotel.

Dining Options: You could honestly never leave the property to eat with the six excellent options offered. CafeTOO, the most casual venue, offers my favorite buffet in Hong Kong with plenty to choose from in a stylish environment. The vegetarian Dan-Dan Noodles were among my favorite things there but anyone could find a favorite dish here. It's all fresh and flavorful and stylishly done. The Lobster Bar and Grill feels like an upscale Parisian bistro with intense reds and blues, seating along side a port holed aquarium, a grand piano and terrific city views. Great for dessert and champagne at the end of an evening or a full dinner. Nadaman, the Japanese star of the property, offers a full sushi bar, a glittering city view and beautifully presented Japanese offerings. Restaurant Petrus, the French Queen of the property sits at the top of the 56-story curved skyscraper with floor to ceiling windows, excellent service, a classical French menu and a hushed, exclusive vibe. The Lobby Bar offers a great place to meet with live classical music and comfortable seating looking out over Pacific Place.

A modern, stylish nod to tradition and bright green colors pull in the park views, the food is excellent and the service personalized and thoughtful. Whisk offers high-concept, artfully presented European cuisine in a modern, stylish space filled with glass bubbles hanging from high ceilings. Vibes is set in a hip interior patio space with water features, cool outdoor lighting at night and a bar.

Spa: The Mira Spa is a subterranean oasis of calm below the chaos of the city. An indoor pool with modern lounge chairs and ever changing colored LED lights on the ceiling envelop you in a sense of peace. The pool is large enough for laps and quiet enough to restore your sense of sanity easily lost outside. Spa treatments are top notch with skilled massage therapists expertly working out those explorer knots and tired feet.

With a well-equipped desk and free wireless it's easy to work from the room. The bathroom opens up to the bedroom with wooden shutters which can be closed for privacy but are nice to have open to watch TV from the big soaking tub. The Intercontinental

Literally sitting on the water, as in water flowing under piers the building sits on, this is a fantastic property if you want to feel as if you are part of the harbor activity. Allow enough time to simply sit on your lovely chaise lounge by the window in your room and stare at the buzzy boat goings on at nearly eye level. Hong Kong harbor is one of the busiest commercial harbors in the world, and it's colorfully evident as a stunning array of boats zip past your window. Rooms are large and comfortable, offering a private ring-side seat for the light show every evening. An excellent view-centered concierge lounge provides a great spot to end the day.

The Vibe: It's all about the smack-on-the-water location with eyeball to eyeball views of boats zipping by and the staggeringly perfect views of the Hong Kong skyline. The rest is gravy.

What's Juicy: Water, water, water, everywhere; the harbor side pool and infinity edge hot tub with awesome views, harbor view concierge lounge, excellent Spa, great dining options, friendly staff and great service.

The Location: Smack on the water, Kowloon side, just a short walk from the Star Ferry. In the middle of everything fun on the Kowloon side and easy to get everywhere.

Property Offerings: Fantastic views, several excellent dining choices, a first class spa and my favorite pool area on the Kowloon side. The lobby lounge is a great place for a light meal and a glass of wine, perched on piers over the water with the parade of boats just outside and the Walk of Stars between for plenty of fun people action wandering by.

The Rooms: Comfortable in warm, dark colors with absolutely fantastic water views. What I love about these rooms is that because it's not a high rise, you're down low with the boats and water and really feel part of the harbor action. You can see people on the boats and feel the water flowing by.

Concierge Lounge: Set above the main lobby lounge, the modern feeling loft space housing the concierge lounge offers plenty of bite sized snacks, hot food options and cocktails. The view is the buzz here, with comfortable seating areas at the edge looking out over the lobby lounge and the harbor beyond it. With free wireless and comfortable seating, it's a great place to work or just catch up with home.

Dining Options: With so many great dining choices it's hard to choose. Nobu offers a seductive, undulating underwater sea vibe with plenty of glass for stellar views and stand out Japanese cuisine from wildly successful chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Alain Ducasse's Spoon is a playful mix of style and top notch cuisine also with stunning harbor views and a ceiling covered in beautiful, hammered silver spoons. Yat Ho Teen, the property's Michelin-starred Cantonese Chinese offering, is a sophisticated, classic venue with excellent seasonal menus, harbor views and stellar service.
