Juicy Tidbits

Conde Nast Traveler says..."The specs: A 122-room high-design hotel in a 1970s-era brick building (formerly a public library) with a superb location on the Prinsengracht, one of the chicest canals in silk-stocking western Amsterdam. The property includes a terrific spa with sauna, steam room, and fitness center. The look: A love-it- or-loathe-it mashup of motifs from Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, dubbed by one critic "the Lady Gaga of the design world." Inspired by Holland's seventeenth-century Golden Age, the no-holds-barred decor includes a navigation-chart rug and red tulip chairs in reception and bold graphics in the guest rooms. The experience: An instant hit with international travelers in the design fields, the Andaz Amsterdam has a pleasant low-key buzz, its atmosphere more hip twenty-first-century auberge than absolutely fabulous boutique hotel. Rooms, though dressed to the nines, are comfortable, well lit, and wonderfully functional, with amenities including iPod docks, espresso machines, electric kettles, and lots of books about Amsterdam. Charming young Dutch staff check you in on a tablet. The excellent restaurant emphasizes seasonal local produce. " ~From cntraveler.com

Travel + Leisure says..."The latest project from Dutch wild child Marcel Wanders—who’s been called the Lady Gaga of design—is, of all places, a former public library. But walking through his dreamlike interiors you would never believe it: quirky touches playfully reimagine many of Holland’s icons (tulips; shipping maps; wooden clogs), while the country’s signature delft blue appears on custom rugs, wallpapers, and hand-painted sinks. A feature we loved: the 40-piece, avant-garde video art collection displayed on screens throughout the hotel comes courtesy of a partnership with the newly reopened Stedelijk Museum nearby." ~From Travelandleisure.com

Conde Nast Traveler says..."The specs: A dazzling renovation by Milanese designer Pietro Lissoni of a nineteenth-century bank (turned music school), the 129-room Conservatorium sits just opposite Museumplein, home to Amsterdam's three finest museums. The look: From the street, you see an imposing neo-Gothic pile, but pull up to the entrance, just round the back, and you're standing before a soaring glass atrium. Inside, exposed steel beams jut out of worn brick walls; antique tiles, distressed rugs, and stone archways co-exist—sublimely—with floating concrete stairs and sleek Italian furniture. Guest rooms are mostly modern, with glass-paneled sliding walls and closets (no doorknobs or handles in sight) and marbled bathrooms so equally minimal they could double as extremely comfy crypts. The experience: It's hard to imagine where the city's attractive young museum staff sipped their gin and elderflower tonics before the lobby lounge and clubbier Tunes Bar opened. The hotel's two restaurants, Tunes and Brasserie, are also popular with the locals—you could make a very fine meal of the latter's ice bar alone (a sophisticated take on the humble salad bar). Juicy Tidbits

Conde Nast Traveler says..."The look: Updated opulence. Coral-, Prussian blue– or saffron-tinted rooms are decorated with details of Old Master paintings—lush tulips or a lace handkerchief, say—blown up to wall size. The experience: At first, Hotel de l’Europe feels purely old-world—doormen in top hats welcome Dutch aristocrats and Russian tycoons; chandeliers glitter above sumptuous carpets. But then a panel in the red-lacquer dressing table pops open to reveal all possible plugs and voltages. Touch a button and a TV rises at the foot of the bed in the Dutch Masters Wing suites. And the Bose sound system has a separate volume control for the all-marble bathroom. Best test of the gallant, long-tenured staff: The bellhop didn’t bat an eye when delivering luggage to a bicycle. Chef Richard van Oostenbrugge presents global flavors as edible artwork." ~From www.cntraveler.com
