Travel + Leisure says..."The property rests on the banks of the mighty Mekong River at the meeting point of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos. The Zen-luxe retreat, near the Thai town of Chiang Saen, unabashedly makes the most of its location. Each of the 77 rooms includes a balcony with a canopied daybed for prime tri-cultural vistas. The Anantara's spa has five treatment rooms, equipped with both Thai massage platforms and private outdoor decks. The Mekong plays host to scenic river rides on long-tail boats, and the resort's on-site elephant camp, affiliated with Thailand's Elephant Conservation Center, offersriding courses. There's also a Thai cooking school, along with two restaurants and a bar. To help support the Doi Tung produce co-op, run by 27 area villages and tribes, the hotel carries its fair-trade nuts and coffee beans to sell to guests." ~From Travelandleisure.com

This hotel says...

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is a renowned conservation and community success story in its own right, assuring a sophisticated experience for the conscientious traveller. It comprises just 22 rooms split accross four small Relais & Chateaux accredited lodges, providing understated luxury and one of the highest land to guest ratios in South Africa, guaranteeing true exclusivity. The 22,000 hectares of pristine wilderness is home to the famous Big 5 as well as a diverse number of smaller and more unusual species, including an abundance of birdlife. In addition to a wide variety of safari activities including game drives and bush walks, picnic lunches and dinners alfresco, sundowners on the dam's pontoon and boat excursions, Kwandwe has introduced a number of 'active participation' activities that invite guests to get involved in the conservation and communityinitiatives being carried out on the reserve. These include the not-for-profit Rhino Conservation Safari that invites guests to help preserve these endangered species working alongside the vets and wildlife managers to track, dart, notch and tag rhinos, providing a very hands involvement in this essential – and thrilling – task, as well as Community Voluntourism programme that enable guests to add value to the community projects being run on the reserve. Guests are invited to impart their skills and expertise through the donation of their time during their safari - from just a couple of hours to a half day - assisting with gardening projects, training community centre staff in computer skills or health and fitness; participate in local arts and craft activities including bead and doll making at the day care centre simply spending an afternoon to enjoy playtime at the pre-school.

Your stay at the Mara Bush Houses not only immerses you in a unique safari experience. It will also make a genuine impact. Asilia plays a leading role in setting up effective area management, supporting conservation projects and contributing to a better future for local Kenyans.

Our goal as Asilia is to be a role model in sustainable tourism. At the heart of our organisation is the conviction that world-class travel can go hand in hand with improving livelihoods and conservation of nature. We strive to create a lasting, positive impact everywhere we operate. We believe in better.

Any sustainable contribution must ultimately begin with oneself. This means we buy locally where possible. It means we reduce our footprint by limiting fossil fuel and use sustainable energy sources such as the sun, recycling water and reducing waste. The remainder of our carbon footprint is offset by supporting local forest projects.

Asilia is proud to be the first travel company in Africa to achieve the highest 5 star GIIRS rating and B-Corporation status. And yet, we trust we do even more. By being creative and developing new models for travel we try to further increase benefits for nature and local people. The Mara Bush Houses showcase this collaborative approach.

How This Juicy Hotel Benefits Its Local Community

POSITIVE IMPACT AT THE MARA BUSH HOUSES

Situated within the 70,000 acre Mara North Conservancy, the Mara Bush Houses work with  11 tourism partners’ camps to combine travel and community development.

The conservancy fees provide the Maasai community with a sustainable livelihood and ensure the conservation of the wildlife in this vital corridor of the Masai Mara ecosystem. In addition to the conservancy’s role in conservation it also provides steady and sustainable employment leading to an improved standard of living for the community as a whole. Furthermore it offers additional benefits like health care, clean energy and empowerment of the local people through education and skills training.

Looking further into the future, Asilia is one of the driving forces behind the initiative towards the formation of an umbrella organisation. By linking all Mara Conservancies, the prospects for this crucial cultural and natural area will greatly improve.

Some of our other actions in the Mara include:
* Supporting the Mara Naboisho Lion Project which aims reduce lion/human conflict through improved understanding of lion behavioural patterns.
* The conservancy revolves around the Koiyaki Guiding School which annually trains over 20 local Maasai to become professional guides.
* Naboisho and its guests support the local community, by donating books and equipment through the Pack for a Purpose initiative. Please visit their website if you would like to know more about this initiative and how you can contribute.
